Network Topology

Typical AC-FIT AP Networking.

Problem Description

On-site portal authentication is working normally and the pop-up window appears as expected. However, there is a prompt indicating that the request sent to the portal device has timed out.

Process Analysis

(1) On-site portal authentication works normally, indicating that the AC redirection and the link between the terminal and the server are normal.

(2) The prompt indicating a timeout in sending a request to the portal device is usually due to the server sending the req_info message to the portal, and the AC not receiving it or receiving it but not processing it.

(3) Debugging the portal on the AC, it was found that the AC did not receive the message sent from the server, while debugging the portal carefully on the server, it was confirmed that the server had sent the message correctly.

(4) Further analysis with packet capture on the upstream interface of the AC revealed that the server had indeed sent the message to the AC, but the AC did not process it.

(5) Using the command "display portal packet statistics" on the AC, it was found that the statistics of invalid portal packets continued to increase.

(6) Usually, in this kind of situation, either the terminal address is incorrect, or the key used by the portal server on the AC is inconsistent with that on the server. By analyzing the captured packets on-site, it was confirmed that the terminal IP address was correct and the problem was solved by reconfiguring the key.

Solution

The problem was solved after configuring the key used by the portal server on the AC to be consistent with the key used by the portal access device on the IMC server.
