Problem Description

When setting a hot spare drive for RAID10 via the HDM interface on an LSI RAID controller, if a member drive in the RAID10 fails, the hot spare drive cannot participate in the rebuild. However, when setting the hot spare drive for RAID10 via BIOS or the OS, the hot spare drive can participate in the rebuild if a member drive fails.

Cause Analysis

RAID10/50/60 consists of multiple RAID1/5/6 arrays combined in a RAID0 configuration. When setting a dedicated hot spare for RAID10/50/60 via HDM, HDM assigns the dedicated hot spare drive only to the first underlying RAID1/5/6 array. If a drive failure occurs in any of the other RAID1/5/6 arrays, the dedicated hot spare drive cannot initiate a rebuild because it does not belong to that RAID1/5/6 array.

Workaround/Solutions

(1) Workaround

Change the dedicated hot spare to a global hot spare in the HDM interface, or delete the dedicated hot spare and re-add it via BIOS or the OS.

(2) Resolution

Upgrade the HDM version to 3.67/6.25 (inclusive) or later, and then delete and re-add the dedicated hot spare in the HDM interface.
